COLUMBUS SKIN CANCER CENTER

The Skin Cancer Unit provides multidisciplinary services for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers, using non-invasive equipment and diagnostic techniques as well as bioengineering in combination with the Clinic’s other activities.

The function of the Columbus Skin Cancer Unit is to ensure optimal, complete diagnosis and therapy for dermatological cancers. The broad objectives are to:

  • Develop a homogeneous diagnostic-therapeutic standard;
  • Define the care provided to patients;
  • Promote scientific research in the field of skin cancers;
  • Take advantage of emerging treatments and technologies;
  • Create new synergies and agreements between specialists, patients’ groups and university centers;
  • Provide training and teaching.

The main activities of the ColumbusSkin Cancer Unit are:

  • Genetic counseling for individuals or families at high risk of melanoma based on the search for risk markers in peripheral blood samples and on clinical records
  • Early diagnosis of skin cancers, in particular melanoma, with instrumental diagnosis performed in stages: epiluminescence microscopy (dermoscopy) and digital capillaroscopy, computed total body mapping
  • Outpatient, day hospital and inpatient dermatological interventions and plastic surgery for the treatment of benign (moles, cysts, keratosis, papilloma) or malignant (carcinomaand melanoma) skin tumors

The Skin Cancer Unit of the Columbus Clinic is the result of a collaboration between Dr. Vincenzo Rapisarda, Director of Plastic Surgery and the Major Burns Unit at Niguarda and Dr. Ezio Croci, specialized in Dermatology and Venereology
